URBAN CULTURE
– All the things you never expect to happen to you
This month’s 5new auction is dedicated to urban culture and in order to make it properly multifaceted, we have invited five authors, strongly connected with the city and its cultural oddities. From architecture, through collage, to urban cycling life, in search of entertainment, captured moments of social relations, to the Asian anthropo and zoomorphic chaos – all this is the urban culture that is served to us on a plate, with chopsticks, in a required African restaurant, in a small slum. How Kaloyan Iliev – Kokimoto, Liana Dimitrova, Veselin Damyanov – Ves, Evgeni Vatsov | FINGAH, arch. Vasko Kashukeev interprets the topic URBAN CULTURE in our new auction, see here.
Viewing days start from 24th of June. Auction starts on 27th of June until 11th of July
There is something incredibly appealing about a city vibe and in those vibrations and feelings that a city creates. It is as if we become addicted to the noise, to the volatility, to the incessant buzzing around us. The urban environment constantly poses new challenges to us – how to hop over the wheelstop, not to step on the shifted tile, to kindly wave to a friend, hurrying to the tram stop, how to not be late, how to combine tasks, how to split seconds, how to find a place for love and a place for social contacts, when everything is overcrowded and full of strings of people…
Every new day in the city is like a new battle from the great war of life. And at the end of each city day we feel like real heroes – winners who have managed to get back to their fortress. To shelter for the night in our cozy homes, for which we exert so much effort to preserve, to build it – to be modern, fresh, to charge us, so that we can throw ourselves into that urban battle again with new strength. All the action raises our adrenaline and we just adore this environment, we need it, we look for it and when we leave it even for a short time for a mini-vacation in the countryside or to the mountains or to the sea we miss it more and more. Addicted to this chaos, we can’t wait to get back into the hustle and bustle. Because time does not stop there. On the contrary. In the city time flies at breakneck speed, we can hardly even catch it. And when we finally manage to ride it, we feel charged and inspired.
But the urban environment is dangerous. Today that thing that is in fashion will not be tomorrow. If we do not pay attention to the picture and do not hold fast we can fall into a black hole, find ourselves in another reality and be spit out of the carousel of the urban moment in a head-on collision of cultures and differences. In search of love and understanding, we can find ourselves in loneliness and alienation. Rather than be inspired, we can feel defeated by our dreams. The city allows us to put on and change masks, to be different every day and still keep our identity.
Mass reproduction and cheap imitation of urban culture is impossible. It is a phantasmagoria that is happening in the moment and if we don’t catch it, it disappears from our memories forever. Fortunately, the 25 original works by Kaloyan Iliev – Kokimoto, Liana Dimitrova, Veselin Damyanov – Ves, Evgeni Vatsov | FINGAH, arch. Vasko Kashukeev actually managed to do just that – to capture the moment with the lure of their own individual artistic approach. These selected works for URBAN CULTURE do not complement each other, do not blend, are not perceived as a stream of events and are not a part of the development and growth of their creators. They are independent artistic sentences and phrases, accidentally heard and scattered around the city.
We came across them and they came across us. We broke off a small piece of the city wall painted in different layers with colorful graffiti to show how many different plots a hot summer urban day can contain.
